My Palm 680′n’Me

The Palm 680

There was a time when I was what you would call an “Early Adopter.”  This was a Golden Age when I would be the first on my block, nay, dare I say it, in my zip code, to get the “Hot New Product/Gadget.”

This is an exhausting lifestyle and at some point I just said “F That!.”  This milestone in my life is marked by my Palm 680, that’s right, the Palm 680.  I got my Palm in February of 2007 and it has now been with me for more than three years.  But I find myself at the crossroads yet again, tempted by the siren’s song of early adoption.

My Muse you ask?

Why it’s the Apple iPhone 4G (or OS4 as the good folks at Apple are calling it because the f’ing AT&T network sucks so so so… so hard that it cannot really support 4G, rather they’re kicking up the 3G–I really don’t like AT&T).

I’m excited about the new iPhone, but also a bit torn.  I feel like it looks great and has a lot of features, but on the flip side that Apple really went a bit overboard punishing/persecuting the poor dumb bastards at Gizmodo (even though it was their review that made me rethink buying an Android).  Also, I feel like everyone will have one, and then I’ll be just another faceless member of the iPhone network.

So the dilemma: do I keep my Palm and maintain my “uniqueness,” or do I take the plunge into Early Adoption Anonymity (such a hard word for me to spell for some reason)?

It seems like life is conspiring to force my hand though… My poor Palm can’t do anything that I need it to do (i.e. Twitter updates, Facebook uploads, Goala, Foursquare, WordPress, bit.ly, Tumblr, Posterous, the names go on and on).

I’ve realized as I write this that I’ve grown attached to my Palm… my dear sweet Palm 680.  Whatever the outcome, I will always love you.
