Turning Into Gods

I recently met a new friend named Jason Silva.  Jason is a documentary film maker and his newest film is called “Turning Into Gods.”  It explores the fascinating possibilities that will arise as our mastery of medicine, genetics, and engineering enable us as a species (the human species) to transcend death.  What will the world look like when we never have to die?  What will it mean to have a relationship that lasts millenia?

Believe it or not, that time is fast approaching…

Words I Wish I Could Use, But Can’t For Various Reasons

Words I Wish I Could Use, But Can't For Various Reasons

There are some words that I wish—oh boy do I ever—that I could use in day-to-day conversation and in my writings, but I can’t. Hence, this new series, “Words I Wish I Could Use, But Can’t For Various Reasons.”

Word 1 – Obfuscate.

I know what the word means, but for some reason I’m not sure I’m using it correctly even when I know I am…
Definition:

  1. To make so confused or opaque as to be difficult to perceive or understand: “A great effort was made . . . to obscure or obfuscate the truth” (Robert Conquest).
  2. To render indistinct or dim; darken: The fog obfuscated the shore

Word 2 – Niggardly.

Almost obvious, but in case it is not, this word sounds like you’re still disappointed with the “outcome” of the Civil War.  That being said, I’m bringing back this word!

Definition:

  1. Grudging and petty in giving or spending.
  2. Meanly small; scanty or meager: left the waiter a niggardly tip.

A Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep young one... sleep.

A friend of mine and I recently met for drinks the other night.  She’s been having trouble sleeping and we had a hours long conversation about the possible reasons for her apparent affliction and also the damage lack of sleep is doing to her psyche and body.  It all got me thinking on just how important sleep is and what makes it so good.  (Note, this article is not for the 3-4 hour a night shut my eyes only for a moment before I pick up and go ape-shit set).

Sometimes, I like to exhaust myself; to get myself to that point where I cannot stand or function and I’m barely able to keep my eyes open just so I can fall into that special kind of sleep, that catatonic bliss where I literally move into another world.  It gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.

I love the feel of the cold sheets when I first get into bed and how they slowly heat up and how it feels to roll onto a virgin patch of linen that’s cold, repeating as necessary.

I love it when it rains and I don’t have to work the next day and when I get up the world is dark, clean, refreshed, and wet.  Cities always seem more fascinating when it rains.  In that way, rain is like leather… I feel like interesting people wear leather.  Actually, interesting people and freaks; leather is a polarized material… it will either make you much cooler or much lamer depending on the placement, design, and how crazy you went with the Bedazzler and airbrush you got from Cousin Jeb.

The best sleep for me comes when the room is pitch, I mean heart of darkness, dark and there’s a soft “white noise” like a fan or AC in the background and no other noise around.  Yeah, that’s the stuff… that’s the good stuff.

I had a good night’s sleep last night…

My Palm 680′n’Me

The Palm 680

There was a time when I was what you would call an “Early Adopter.”  This was a Golden Age when I would be the first on my block, nay, dare I say it, in my zip code, to get the “Hot New Product/Gadget.”

This is an exhausting lifestyle and at some point I just said “F That!.”  This milestone in my life is marked by my Palm 680, that’s right, the Palm 680.  I got my Palm in February of 2007 and it has now been with me for more than three years.  But I find myself at the crossroads yet again, tempted by the siren’s song of early adoption.

My Muse you ask?

Why it’s the Apple iPhone 4G (or OS4 as the good folks at Apple are calling it because the f’ing AT&T network sucks so so so… so hard that it cannot really support 4G, rather they’re kicking up the 3G–I really don’t like AT&T).

I’m excited about the new iPhone, but also a bit torn.  I feel like it looks great and has a lot of features, but on the flip side that Apple really went a bit overboard punishing/persecuting the poor dumb bastards at Gizmodo (even though it was their review that made me rethink buying an Android).  Also, I feel like everyone will have one, and then I’ll be just another faceless member of the iPhone network.

So the dilemma: do I keep my Palm and maintain my “uniqueness,” or do I take the plunge into Early Adoption Anonymity (such a hard word for me to spell for some reason)?

It seems like life is conspiring to force my hand though… My poor Palm can’t do anything that I need it to do (i.e. Twitter updates, Facebook uploads, Goala, Foursquare, WordPress, bit.ly, Tumblr, Posterous, the names go on and on).

I’ve realized as I write this that I’ve grown attached to my Palm… my dear sweet Palm 680.  Whatever the outcome, I will always love you.
